In the legend beneath the etching, Piranesi admitted: "One does not know the purpose of this grand ediface, the information that exists is insufficient to clarify this point."
This temple to Hera was referred to in Piranesi's time as The Basilica, but Piranesi recorded a differing belief that it was once the College of the Anfictions, an obscure designation that would associate it with the Amphyctionic League, the religious council of Greek city-states.
