Color PaletteThe two Baroque churches were built on the site of the Forum of Trajan of which the only reminder was the Trajan's Column, erected in 113 A.D. to commemorate his military victories.
In 1162, it was decreed upon pain of death that the column was to remain untouched, while the rest of the forum was scavenged for building materials.
As Piranesi noted in another etching, Pope Sixtus V in 1587 excavated through fifteen feet of modern rubble to reveal the base of the column and replaced the statute of Trajan atop with one of St. Peter.
