African Collection Provenance Research
Since 2022, the Indianapolis Museum of Art has been systematically reviewing its holdings of art from the continent of Africa with particular attention paid to the period in which the object left its place of origin, the type of object, and the authorizing party that sanctioned its removal. These focus areas help the museum to ascertain the legal, ethical, and moral, merit of the object being housed in the collection. The museum is committed to ethically returning objects to communities of origin should it be found that they left under duress, by illegal means, or are asserted as cultural patrimony. The Indianapolis Museum of Art recognizes the sovereignty of indigenous communities’ heritage and data and welcomes collaborative knowledge sharing.
