Description
Between 1840 and 1851, the American Art Union promoted American art by distributing engravings of the best American paintings of the day to its nationwide membership. These engravings, by the most skilled American engravers, reproduced major paintings by such artists as Thomas Cole, Asher B. Durand, George Caleb Bingham and William Sidney Mount among others that were in the possession of the Art Union and distributed in annual lotteries among its membership.
